The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, recently shared his shocking experience in Imo State, where he was subjected to physical assault during an industrial action. While Ajaero accused the police authorities of orchestrating the incident, they have vehemently denied any involvement.
Ajaero described the incident, stating that he was dragged on the floor and beaten like a common criminal. The assault occurred when the NLC was enforcing an industrial action in Imo State. Ajaero further alleged that the police authorities and the state government were behind the attack, although both parties have denied any responsibility.
Recounting the events, Ajaero explained that while he was at the NLC secretariat with journalists and officials to address the press, the police arrived and withdrew the security personnel present. He was then arrested by the police and handed over to a group of thugs. One of the police officers even questioned the decision to hand him over, but his superior silenced him. Ajaero was then forcefully taken to a bus where he was subjected to a brutal beating. He was blindfolded, his nose and other parts of his body were tied, and he was repeatedly hit with various objects. The assailants allegedly threatened him, mentioning the name of a river where they claimed they were taking him.
In response to the assault, organized labor picketed the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, causing inconvenience to travelers. The federal government expressed its disapproval of this action. The Trade Union Congress (TUC) and the NLC threatened a nationwide strike unless the police authorities apprehend the officers involved in the incident. However, the National Industrial Court (NIC) has barred the unions from proceeding with the strike.
In light of the incident, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered an investigation into the matter. He assured that appropriate actions would be taken based on the findings of the investigation.
In Conclusion, The assault on NLC President Joe Ajaero in Imo State has raised concerns about the safety and protection of labor leaders in Nigeria. The conflicting accounts between Ajaero and the police authorities have further muddled the situation. As investigations continue, it is crucial for justice to prevail and for those responsible for the assault to be held accountable. The incident has also highlighted the need for improved security measures to safeguard the rights and well-being of labor leaders and workers across the country.
