Dr. Monday Onyekachi Ubani, SAN, PhD, Celebrates Another Year of Grace, Service, and Excellence

Today, the legal profession, the Christian community, and countless admirers across Nigeria join in celebrating an exceptional leader, distinguished legal practitioner, and committed servant of God, Dr. Monday Onyekachi Ubani, SAN, PhD, as he marks another birthday.

The occasion is not merely a celebration of age but a tribute to a life distinguished by unwavering integrity, selfless service, visionary leadership, and remarkable contributions to the legal profession, the Church, and national development.

Throughout an illustrious career spanning decades, Dr. Ubani has remained a respected voice in the pursuit of justice and the rule of law. His outstanding leadership within the Nigerian Bar Association has earned him widespread admiration. He has served meritoriously as Chairman of the NBA Ikeja Branch, Vice President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Chairman of NBA-SPIDEL, and currently serves as Chairman of the NBA Electoral Reform Committee, where he continues to champion reforms aimed at strengthening democratic governance within the legal profession.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Dr. Ubani is a trusted adviser and public servant. He currently serves as Legal Adviser to the President of the Senate, while also providing legal counsel to several corporate organizations and charitable institutions. His influence extends across public and private sectors, where his wisdom, experience, and commitment to excellence continue to inspire confidence.

A proud son of Ikwuano in Abia State, Dr. Ubani made history as the first Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) from Ikwuano. His academic accomplishments equally reflect his passion for knowledge and continuous development, culminating in the award of a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Law.


Outside the courtroom, Dr. Ubani's life is deeply rooted in Christian service. A devoted Deacon in the Assemblies of God Church, Nigeria, he serves as Legal Adviser to the President of the Senate of Assemblies of God Nigeria, exemplifying the harmonious integration of faith and professional excellence. He is also a proud Clasfonite and a former President of the Full Gospel Business Men's Fellowship International, Allen Executive Chapter, where he recorded the remarkable feat of pioneering the establishment of two new fellowship chapters in a single day.

As he celebrates another year of God's abundant grace and faithfulness, Dr. Ubani reflects with profound gratitude on a life blessed by divine favour and sustained by God's unfailing mercy. He acknowledges the invaluable support of his family, friends, colleagues, associates, and numerous well-wishers whose encouragement and prayers have contributed to his remarkable journey.

Looking ahead, Dr. Ubani remains steadfast in his commitment to promoting justice, defending the rule of law, strengthening democratic institutions, advancing national development, and expanding the Kingdom of God through faithful service.

His life continues to serve as an inspiration to young lawyers, public servants, and believers who aspire to combine professional excellence with integrity, humility, and unwavering faith.

Are We at a Judicial Crossroads with the Decisions of Justices Umar and Omotosho on INEC’s Electoral Guidelines?

The two decisions of the Federal High Court delivered respectively by Justice Mohammed G. Umar and Justice James Kolawole Omotosho are already generating intense constitutional and electoral discourse within legal circles. Both judgments dealt with the legality of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)’s administrative timetable and guidelines issued for the 2027 general elections vis-à-vis the provisions of the Electoral Act 2026. Although both courts addressed substantially similar legal questions, they arrived at partially convergent and partially divergent conclusions. The First Major Casualty of Section 83 of the Electoral Act 2026 May Have Emerged

The recent decision of the Federal High Court in Fubara Dagogo v. All Progressives Congress (APC) & 3 Ors., Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/591/2026 delivered by Justice Joyce Abdulmalik, represents a significant development in Nigeria’s pre-election jurisprudence. In that case, the court struck out the suit challenging the APC National Congress and proceeded to award punitive costs of ₦10 million each against the plaintiff, Mr. Fubara Dagogo, and his counsel, Chief Sir O.A.U. Onyema, for what the court considered a frivolous and non-justiciable action. Section 83 and the Myth of Judicial Silence in Party Politics

The recent assertion by my brother, Festus Okoye Esq, that lawyers have become scapegoats in internal party conflicts owing to their recourse to the courts calls for careful constitutional and judicial interrogation. At the centre of this debate lies Section 83 of the Electoral Act 2026, particularly the suggestion that it absolutely ousts the jurisdiction of the courts over the internal affairs of political parties. With the greatest respect to lawyers who are holding this view, that broad interpretation may appear overstretched and not constitutionally sustainable. Section 83(5) of the Electoral Act, read in isolation, appears to bar courts from entertaining disputes relating to party internal issues absolutely.  On a literal reading, it suggests a legislative intent to shield political parties from judicial scrutiny.
