"UN Universal Periodic Review Validation Conference Highlights Nigeria's Commitment to Human Rights and Development"

The validation conference of the UN Universal Periodic Review was held at the Haradua Centre in Abuja on 20th October 2023. The conference began at 9:30am with a welcome address from Dr. Princess Frank-Chukwuani, the representative of the Solicitor-General/Permanent Secretary. She mentioned that the Solicitor-General was unable to attend due to another national duty. Dr. Princess emphasized that the Universal Periodic Review is a state-driven process under the United Nations Human Rights Council, which assesses how states fulfill their human rights obligations. Nigeria has undergone reviews in 2009, 2013, and 2018, and preparations are underway for the 4th schedule in January/February 2024. The inter-ministerial Committee (IMC) was inaugurated in September 2022 by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation to oversee the process. She highlighted that the IMC has been engaging stakeholders across the six geopolitical zones of Nigeria to gather information

United Nations UPR (Universal Periodic Review) Report on Nigeria.

The UPR is a mechanism under the United Nations Human Rights Council during which the human rights records of all United Nations Member States are reviewed periodically. In 2019, Nigeria underwent its 3rd UPR review, and the report recommended various measures to tackle human rights violations in the country. The Nigerian government has acknowledged the recommendations and has committed to implementing them. Some of the recommendations include the abolition of the death penalty, improving prison conditions, ending torture, promoting freedom of expression, and addressing the issues of gender-based violence and discrimination against vulnerable groups. The Federal Government, on Wednesday, that it is committed to addressing issues of human rights violations in the country.
