The Federal Government has called on the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) to respect a court order and halt their planned nationwide strike. The move comes as the labour unions engage in a face-off with the Imo State Government over issues of unpaid salaries, pensions, and labor rights violations.
In a statement issued by Kamarudeen Ogundele, the Special Assistant Communication & Publicity to the AGF & Minister of Justice Lateef Fagbemi, the unions were reminded of the court order that prohibits them from embarking on the strike. The interim order, granted on November 10 by the President of the National Industrial Court of Nigeria, Justice B. B. Kanyip, has been served to the unions. Failure to comply with the court order would be considered contempt of court.

The Federal Government emphasized the importance of respecting the rule of law and urged the unions to refrain from taking matters into their own hands. Workers were encouraged to report for duty without fear, as their safety would be protected within the legal framework.
The decision to call for a nationwide strike by the NLC and TUC came after the National President of the NLC, Joe Ajaero, was assaulted in Imo State during a demonstration against the non-payment of salaries and pensions for 44 months and other labor rights violations. The unions demanded the resignation of the individuals involved in the attack and had previously staged a protest at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja to press for their demands.
The Federal Government's appeal to the NLC and TUC to obey the court order and suspend the strike is aimed at maintaining peace and order while ensuring that the issues raised by the unions are addressed through proper legal channels.
