Dear Colleagues,

I'd like to address the recent and distressing incident involving our colleague, Ms. Uduak, who was tragically and wrongly accused of kidnapping and subsequently subjected to a horrific act of mob violence. Upon hearing of her ordeal, I immediately reached out to Ms. Uduak and I have closely followed the developments surrounding her case.

I'm heartened to report that the Nigerian Bar Association, Lagos Branch, in collaboration with the 3rd Vice President of the Nigerian Bar Association and other members of the Lagos Branch, has taken swift action. They have reached out to Ms. Uduak, visited her and are actively addressing some of the challenges she faces.

Additionally, the leadership of the Ikeja Branch of our Association has extended its support to Ms. Uduak. My sincere gratitude goes out to all those who have taken these commendable steps.

Special appreciation is due to Mr. Kelechi Attamah and other members of the 2013 and 2019 classes of the University of Nigeria in Lagos, as well as other alumni of the institution. Their initial efforts to alleviate some of Ms. Uduak's burdens and continued support have been invaluable. I also thank the lawyer who watched Ms. Uduak's brief at the arraignment.

I would also like to extend my thanks to the leadership of the Nigerian Bar Association, the African Women Lawyers Association, Surulere Lawyers Forum, and all our colleagues who have shown support.

It is crucial to recognize the commendable work of the Nigerian Police. Upon being informed of the situation, they took active steps to protect Ms. Uduak, risking their lives to stop the mob. They subsequently arrested and charged the perpetrators the following day. Their action is very commendable.

Presently, two suspects have been charged, and further investigations are underway. The leadership of the NBA Lagos Branch, I'm informed, will provide more detailed information on these developments shortly.

During this time, I urge everyone to exercise caution, be security-conscious, and, whenever possible, avoid venturing alone to unfamiliar places. As an Association, we must collectively work to ensure that the circumstances that led to this tragic incident are not repeated.

Rest assured, the NBA Security Agencies Relations Committee is committed to working closely with all relevant agencies and organisations to address the current challenges and prevent such incidents in the future.

Thank you for your support and solidarity during this trying time.

Warm regards,

*Chukwuka Ikwuazom, SAN*
Chairman, Nigerian Bar Association Security Agencies Relations Committee (NBA-SARC)
