Nigerian Police Summon NLC President, Joe Ajaero, on Allegations of Criminal Conspiracy and Terrorism Financing
In a recent development, the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, has been summoned by the Office of the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Intelligence Response Team (IRT), regarding allegations of criminal conspiracy, terrorism financing, treasonable felony, subversion, and cybercrime. Ajaero has been requested to appear for an interview at the IRT Complex in Guzape District, Abuja, on Tuesday, August 20, 2024.
The official letter, serving as an invitation, states that Ajaero is considered a person of interest in the ongoing investigation. Failure to comply with this summons could perhaps result in a warrant for arrest. ACP Adamu S. Muazu, on behalf of the Deputy Commissioner of Police, IRT, has signed the letter.
Just a couple of weeks ago, on August 7, armed security personnel reportedly invaded the headquarters of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), known as the Labour House, in Abuja. During the raid, they forcibly entered certain offices and confiscated materials. These materials were purportedly claimed to be linked to inciting and organizing the #EndBadGovernance protests in the country.
On the same day, the National Executive Council (NEC) of the NLC demanded the reversal of what they termed "ill-conceived policies of the government," which have contributed to the prevailing economic crisis. As part of their demand, the NEC urged the government to implement policies that prioritize the welfare of the people, create jobs, and ensure equitable distribution of resources.

In response to the raid and the ongoing protests, the NEC directed workers across the country to take measures to protect themselves while voicing their concerns non-violently. They emphasized their commitment to defending the rights and welfare of Nigerian workers and the population at large.
Furthermore, the NEC called for an independent investigation into the attacks on the protesters. They stated that those responsible must be held accountable, and justice should be served to both the victims and their families. The NEC also mandated the National Leadership to determine a day to be set aside as a National Day of Mourning in honor of those who have been injured or killed during the protests.
As the case unfolds, it remains to be seen how NLC President Joe Ajaero will respond to the police summons. The allegations of criminal conspiracy, terrorism financing, treasonable felony, subversion, and cybercrime will undoubtedly have significant implications for both Ajaero and the Nigeria Labour Congress.
