Otu Oka-iwu Abuja Condemns Harassment of Member in Federal High Court Premises
A video circulating on social media platforms shows Maxwell being harassed and assaulted while addressing the press after a court session. According to information available to the Otu Oka-iwu, Maxwell represents the defendants in a matter where Mr. Jesam Michael Ubi is the nominal complainant and a witness. After the court session, Mr. Jesam addressed the press, and the defendants' legal team was invited to provide a balanced report. However, sympathizers of Mr. Jesam mobilized and surrounded Maxwell, hijacking his interview and leading to the harassment and assault seen in the video.
The Otu Oka-iwu Abuja has taken a strong stance against this incident, emphasizing that lawyers should not be subjected to such treatment while carrying out their professional duties, especially within the court premises. The organization calls for Mr. Jesam to be cited for contempt of court.
In a statement, Chidi Udekwe, President of Otu Oka-iwu Abuja, said, "Lawyers cannot become endangered species both within and outside the court. We will not tolerate any form of harassment or intimidation of our members while they are carrying out their duties."
The Otu Oka-iwu Abuja urges the relevant authorities to take necessary action to ensure the safety and security of lawyers and prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.
