Liberians are heading to the polls in a closely contested presidential run-off between incumbent President George Weah and political veteran Joseph Boakai. The two candidates previously faced off in 2017, with Weah emerging as the winner with over 61% of the votes. The run-off is expected to be a close race, with both candidates vying for the support of the 18 candidates who did not make it through to the second round.
Weah, a former football star and the only African to win the Ballon d'Or, has focused his campaign on his achievements in office, including improvements in education, infrastructure, and healthcare. However, critics argue that he has not done enough to address the country's economic challenges, including high prices and shortages. Boakai, on the other hand, has criticized Weah for corruption, which has worsened during his presidency, according to Transparency International.
The election is the first since the end of the United Nations' peacekeeping mission in Liberia in 2018, following two civil wars that claimed the lives of over 250,000 people. More than 2.4 million people are registered to vote, and turnout is expected to be a significant factor in determining the outcome of the election.
The electoral commission has 15 days to publish the results, but it may do so sooner. The election has raised concerns about potential post-election violence, as clashes during the campaign have already resulted in several deaths. Both candidates have denounced irregularities during the first round of voting.
Overall, the outcome of the run-off will determine whether Weah secures a second term as president or if Boakai, with his extensive political experience, will take the reins of leadership in Liberia.
