Appeal Court Overturns Election Tribunal Decision, Orders Fresh Election in Udenu/Igboeze-North Federal Constituency

Disqualification of Labor Party Candidate Adds Uncertainty to the Political Landscape.

In a surprising turn of events, the Appeal Court in Lagos has reversed the decision of the Election Tribunal to nullify the election of the Udenu/Igboeze-North federal constituency, which took place on February 25th, 2023. The court also disqualified the Labor Party candidate, Hon. Denis Agbo, who was initially declared the winner of the election. The verdict, delivered on Friday, has sent shockwaves through the political landscape.

The court's decision came in response to a petition filed by the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Hon. Dr. Oby Ajih, who contested the election outcome on the grounds of irregularities and electoral malpractice. The court concurred with the petitioner's arguments, ruling that the election was significantly marred by irregularities that had a substantial impact on its outcome.
As a consequence, the court has ordered a fresh election to be conducted within 90 days in the Udenu/Igboeze-North federal constituency. Additionally, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has been directed to remove the disqualified Labor Party candidate, Hon. Denis Agbo, from its records.

Hon. Dr. Oby Ajih, the APC candidate, expressed his satisfaction with the court's decision, praising the judges for upholding the rule of law and ensuring justice prevailed. This ruling has not only breathed new life into his campaign but has also rejuvenated the hopes of his supporters.

Fidelis Oditah, QC, SAN, Denies Benefiting from $1.3 Billion Malabu Oil Deal

Fidelis Oditah, a Queen's Counsel and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), has categorically denied benefiting from the controversial $1.3 billion Malabu oil deal. Oditah's denial comes in response to a 2019 report by SaharaReporters, which alleged that he had testified in a Milan court as a consultant for Eni, one of the companies accused of corruption in the sale of the OPL 245 block in 2011. Oditah stated, "I have no interest whatsoever, direct or indirect, in OPL 245 and have never received any benefit from the US$1.3 billion Malabu payment. Neither has Indigo." He further clarified that his company, Indigo Drilling Limited ("Indigo"), did not drill the Etan oilfield in OPL 245 and was not even incorporated until six years after the drilling took place.
