breaking news- Notable personalities drums support for the Otu-okaiwu Abuja apprenticeship scheme and made emphasis on the need to make it a national project.
The Nigerian legal system has been subjected to scrutiny over the years due to its corrupt practices. However, a unique and valuable apprenticeship model, called the Igba Boyi Endowment, has been launched to transfer knowledge and skills from experienced lawyers to young lawyers. This model promotes mentorship and career development for young lawyers and is inclusive of members from all backgrounds, not just Igbo lawyers.
The Otu-okaiwu Abuja (Igbo Lawyers Association) hosted the Igba Boyi Endowment Launch on Thursday, September 14, 2023, which received wide-spectrum support from notable members of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), including the President of the NBA, Mr. Yakubu C. Maikyau. Other personalities present at the event include former Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), Prof. Sam Amadi, Chief Awa Kalu, SAN, Kanu Agabi, SAN, and Benbella Anachebe, SAN. Senator Ben Obi, the Attorney General of Abia state, and FIDA Chairperson were also present.
The program strives to institutionalize mentorship and career development for young lawyers and replicate the success of Ndigbo in business within the legal profession. The endowment fund was initiated by the President of Otu Oka-Iwu, Abuja Chapter, Chief Ejiofor Onwuaso, and aims to promote inclusivity by welcoming lawyers of all backgrounds.
Prof. Sam Amadi, in his keynote address, called for the scrapping of the Nigerian Law School, as he believes that it no longer serves any purpose. He argued that the Nigerian legal system is one of the most corrupt in the world, and the law school is a waste of time and resources.
NBA President Maikyau expressed his support for the apprenticeship scheme and vowed to expand it into a national mentorship policy of the federal government. He appealed to the scheme not to restrict mentorship and career development to only Igbo lawyers.
Chief Agabi, SAN, made a donation of N15 million in support of the project and expressed concern about the loss of ethics and values in the legal profession. He encouraged lawyers to conduct due diligence on the sources of their income and avoid "hot money" that threatens the ethical values of the legal profession.
The Igba Boyi Endowment selection process for mentorship and career development is open to young lawyers with one to five years of experience. This project could be a game-changer in the Nigerian legal sector and help promote ethical values, inclusivity, and professional development among young lawyers.
