Abuja, Nigeria | 30 October 2026

Prominent legal practitioner and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Emeka J.P. Obegolu, SAN, has called on legal practitioners across the country to actively participate in the Nigerian Bar Association Institute of Continuing Legal Education (NBA-ICLE) National Training Needs Assessment Survey, aimed at strengthening professional development and improving the quality of legal practice in Nigeria.

The nationwide survey, launched by the NBA-ICLE, is designed to identify the training priorities, professional challenges and learning preferences of Nigerian lawyers, with the findings expected to guide the Institute's capacity-building programmes over the next 12 months.

In his appeal to members of the legal profession, Obegolu, SAN, emphasised that continuing legal education must reflect the practical realities and evolving demands of legal practice in Nigeria.

According to him, the initiative presents an important opportunity for lawyers to contribute directly to the development of relevant, accessible and career-enhancing professional training programmes.

The survey, which takes approximately five minutes to complete, contains 12 focused questions addressing critical aspects of professional development, including:

  • Priority areas of substantive law and technical skills required to strengthen legal practice.
  • Preferred learning methods, including physical training, live virtual sessions, self-paced programmes and on-demand learning.
  • Challenges affecting participation in continuing legal education, particularly training costs, scheduling difficulties and travel constraints.

Obegolu, SAN, stressed that the responses received would significantly influence the design and delivery of future NBA-ICLE training programmes.

“A stronger, more responsive professional development framework serves us all and elevates the standards of the Bar,” he stated.

He particularly encouraged young lawyers, senior practitioners and members of the various NBA branches to take advantage of the initiative, noting that their collective contributions would help build a more effective professional development framework.

The Senior Advocate further urged lawyers to circulate the survey among colleagues in their chambers, branches and professional networks to ensure broad participation.

SURVEY DEADLINE AND PARTICIPATION

The survey is open to all members of the Nigerian Bar Association and will close on Friday, 6 November 2026.

Interested legal practitioners are encouraged to complete the survey through the official NBA-ICLE portal:

LEGAL DIARY NEWS ANALYSIS

The initiative represents an important step towards developing a more responsive and practice-oriented continuing legal education system in Nigeria.

By allowing lawyers to identify their professional training needs, the NBA-ICLE has an opportunity to bridge existing knowledge and skills gaps while improving access to professional development opportunities.

Broad participation will be essential to ensuring that the resulting programmes reflect the diverse needs of legal practitioners across Nigeria.

Legal Diary News therefore encourages members of the Nigerian Bar Association to participate before the 6 November 2026 deadline and contribute towards strengthening professional competence and excellence at the Nigerian Bar.
