Retired Supreme Court Justice Amina Adamu Augie has raised serious concerns about the state of Nigeria’s judiciary, particularly the persistent threat posed by corruption and the increasing misuse of artificial intelligence by legal practitioners.
Speaking on the broader challenges confronting the administration of justice, Justice Augie warned that corruption within the judicial system can weaken the independence of courts, erode public confidence and undermine the constitutional responsibility of the judiciary to dispense justice fairly and impartially. She stressed that when judicial processes are influenced by improper considerations, the credibility of court decisions and the legitimacy of the justice system are placed at risk.
According to her, the fight against corruption requires a sustained commitment to integrity, transparency, accountability and professional discipline among judges, lawyers and other stakeholders in the justice sector. She emphasized that judicial officers must remain guided by the law, ethical principles and the solemn duty to protect the rights of litigants, regardless of their status or influence.
Justice Augie also cautioned lawyers against the careless or excessive use of artificial intelligence in legal practice. While acknowledging that AI can assist with legal research, drafting, document review and other professional tasks, she warned that technology must not replace independent legal reasoning, professional judgment or the responsibility to verify information.
She noted that reliance on inaccurate, incomplete or fabricated AI-generated materials could lead to serious consequences, including the filing of defective processes, the citation of non-existent authorities and the presentation of misleading arguments before the courts. Such conduct, whether deliberate or negligent, could expose legal practitioners to disciplinary action and damage the administration of justice.
The retired Justice therefore urged lawyers to treat AI as a support tool rather than a substitute for competence and diligence. She advised practitioners to verify all authorities, facts and legal propositions generated through technological platforms before relying on them in court or incorporating them into professional documents.
Justice Augie further called on judicial officers and members of the legal profession to uphold the highest standards of conduct, stressing that public trust in the justice system depends not only on the correctness of judicial decisions but also on the integrity and transparency of the processes through which those decisions are reached.
Legal Significance: Justice Augie’s remarks underscore the urgent need for comprehensive judicial reforms, stronger mechanisms for accountability and effective professional discipline within Nigeria’s legal system. They also highlight the importance of developing clear ethical guidelines for the use of artificial intelligence in legal practice, including mandatory verification of AI-generated content, protection of confidential information and continued reliance on human judgment.
Her warning serves as a reminder that technological advancement must be accompanied by responsibility, competence and adherence to professional ethics. The credibility of the judiciary and the legal profession ultimately depends on the commitment of all practitioners to fairness, honesty, independence and the proper administration of justice.
