BLUE SILKS CONTROVERSY: LAWYERS PETITION DSS, PCC OVER ALLEGED PERSECUTION BY SUPREME COURT REGISTRAR

Legal Diary News | 19 October 2026

A group of non-litigation legal practitioners has reportedly petitioned the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Public Complaints Commission (PCC) over allegations involving the Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, following a controversy surrounding the recognition of

the purported "Blue Silks" rank.

The development has generated concerns over professional recognition, regulatory authority and disciplinary procedures within Nigeria's legal profession.

According to a report published by The Leader on 18 October 2026, the petitioning lawyers raised allegations concerning the treatment of legal practitioners associated with the controversial designation.

The dispute reportedly centres on the use and recognition of the so-called Blue Silks title, which has become a subject of contention within the legal community.

Questions Over Professional Recognition and Regulatory Authority

The controversy raises important legal questions regarding the authority to confer professional distinctions on legal practitioners in Nigeria.

Under the existing legal framework, the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) is a recognised professional distinction conferred in accordance with applicable laws and guidelines.

The purported Blue Silks designation, however, is not an established statutory professional rank comparable to that of Senior Advocate of Nigeria.

Consequently, the dispute raises questions about whether private professional groups may adopt honorary titles and the extent to which such designations could conflict with existing professional regulations.

Disciplinary Proceedings and Fair Hearing

Another significant aspect of the controversy concerns reported disciplinary proceedings involving lawyers associated with the designation.

The development brings into focus the importance of due process, fair hearing and compliance with established disciplinary procedures in addressing allegations of professional misconduct.

Legal practitioners remain subject to the Rules of Professional Conduct and the disciplinary framework established under the Legal Practitioners Act.

However, any allegation of professional misconduct must be examined through the appropriate legal and regulatory mechanisms, with due regard for the rights of the affected practitioners.

Petition Raises Broader Questions for the Legal Profession

The reported petitions to the DSS and PCC highlight the growing controversy surrounding professional titles and regulatory oversight within Nigeria's legal community.

The matter also underscores the need for clarity regarding the recognition of professional distinctions, the powers of regulatory institutions and the procedures for resolving disputes involving legal practitioners.

As the controversy unfolds, attention will likely focus on the responses of the relevant authorities and whether the allegations will result in further administrative or disciplinary action.

It is important to emphasise that the allegations against the Chief Registrar remain unproven, and the filing of a petition does not constitute a finding of wrongdoing.

The reported position of the Chief Registrar and any official response from the relevant authorities have not been independently established in this report.
