The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, has called on legal practitioners across Nigeria to uphold the highest standards of professional ethics, defend constitutional supremacy and remain steadfast in promoting the rule of law.
Fagbemi made the call during the commissioning of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Ikare-Akoko Branch Bar and Library Centre, where he emphasised the indispensable role of lawyers in strengthening democratic governance, protecting fundamental rights and sustaining public confidence in the justice system.
The Attorney-General stressed that the legal profession occupies a strategic position in safeguarding the Constitution and ensuring that government institutions operate within the confines of the law.
He urged lawyers to discharge their professional responsibilities with integrity, competence and a strong sense of justice, noting the importance of ethical conduct in preserving the dignity and credibility of the legal profession.
AGF Emphasises Judicial Independence and Access to Justice
Speaking on the importance of an independent judiciary, Fagbemi underscored the need to protect judicial institutions from undue interference while ensuring that justice remains accessible to all Nigerians, irrespective of their social or economic status.
He further highlighted the importance of continuous legal education, professional development and technological innovation in improving the efficiency of legal practice and the administration of justice.
According to the Attorney-General, the evolving nature of legal practice requires practitioners to embrace modern technology, strengthen their professional competence and remain responsive to emerging challenges within the justice sector.
Calls for Stronger Collaboration Among Justice Sector Stakeholders
Fagbemi also advocated closer cooperation between the Nigerian Bar Association, the judiciary and the Federal Ministry of Justice in addressing challenges confronting the administration of justice.
He emphasised the need for collective efforts towards strengthening legal institutions, improving access to justice and promoting accountability within the justice system.
The commissioning of the NBA Ikare-Akoko Branch Bar and Library Centre represents an important investment in professional development, legal research and knowledge-sharing among members of the legal profession.
The facility is expected to provide lawyers with improved access to legal resources while encouraging continuing professional education and collaboration.
The Attorney-General's remarks reinforce the responsibility of Nigerian lawyers to serve not merely as advocates for their clients but also as custodians of constitutional democracy, defenders of fundamental rights and promoters of justice.
