REQUIEM TRIBUTE TO ONYEKACHUKWU ALEX ANUNUSORON BEHALF OF THE NIGERIAN BAR ASSOCIATION, ABUJA BRANCH (UNITY BAR)
It is with a profound sense of loss that the Nigerian Bar Association, Abuja Branch, pays tribute to Onyekachukwu Alex Anunusor, a young lawyer, a valued member of our Branch and a member of the 2019 Call to Bar Set, whose life and promising journey in the legal profession have been brought to an untimely end after a protracted illness.
Alex was one of us; a brother at the Bar, a colleague and a member of our professional family. Alex had lofty dreams and ambitions to pursue. Those dreams, and the future they envisioned, now belong to others.
These reflections remind us that however far we intend to travel, however much we hope to achieve, and however many tomorrows we confidently make plans for, life does not sign a contract with us for those tomorrows. They are neither sealed, nor ever truly delivered.
Alex was young. He belonged to a generation of lawyers still at the beginning of their professional journey. Like all of us, he had plans, aspirations and perhaps a long list of milestones he hoped someday to accomplish. But life, in its profound mystery, sometimes closes a chapter when we believed the story was still only beginning.
And so, as we mourn Alex today, perhaps the lesson is not that we should abandon ambition, but that we should hold our ambitions with humility. We must cherish the people with whom we share the journey, and remember that the greatest certainty we possess is not how long the journey will be, but that one day it will end.
For his contemporaries of the 2019 Call Set, today carries a particular poignancy. Those who answered the same call, took the same oath and embarked upon the noble profession together are now gathered - not to celebrate another achievement in Alex's journey, but to bid him farewell. It is a sobering reminder of how fragile life truly is.
Yet we do not gather only to mourn. We gather to honour a life that was lived among us. Alex may have departed too soon, but he leaves behind memories, relationships, and the imprint of his presence.
The Abuja Branch deeply sympathises with his family, his friends, his colleagues, and particularly the members of his Call Set. To his family, we say: the Nigerian Bar mourns with you. Alex was not only your son and brother; he was our colleague and brother at the Bar.
Today, words cannot alter the finality of this loss. We bow to the sovereignty of God, cherish the memory he leaves behind, and commend his soul to the Almighty.
Farewell, Alex.
You came with promise.
You walked among us as a brother.
You have now gone ahead on a journey we must all, one day, undertake.
May your gentle soul rest in perfect peace.
Adieu, Counsel.
Yakubu Philemon SAN
Chairman
