Prof Agomoh, who was accompanied by some SPIDEL Executives and CPC members including Paul Daudu, SAN, Andrew O. Odum, SAN, Papa Dorn Cklaims Enameh, Bulus Atsen fsi, Folannoh Aluko, Emmanuel Tayo Ogunjide, Dr. Lilian Ojimma, Vincent Adodo and Monday Adjeh, described the essential purpose of the visit as being to notify the NBA President that SPIDEL will be having its 2026 Conference at Umuahia, Abia State, from 9th - 13th November, 2026. Madam Chair requested the President’s support by leading the Conference with her presence and that of other National Executive members of NBA, and prayed the President to invite key persons that would only attend the conference based on the President’s invitation. In her speech, Prof Agomoh further referred to the Conference as an opportunity to make a concrete statement on the issues that are of importance to SPIDEL as demonstrated by the Conference theme: ‘In Public Interest: Advancing Justice, Democracy and Development’.
Welcoming the SPIDEL delegate, Mrs Badejo-Okusanya, SAN, congratulated Prof Agomoh for her ability to work well with the good number of SANs that SPIDEL boasts of, describing it as an indication of her hard work and acceptance by the members.
Madam President assured the Section that it would be her honour to attend SPIDEL’s conference with as many members of her Executives as possible and pledged her willingness to invite key individuals to the Conference.
Speaking on the Conference theme, which focuses on public interest, the President recalled an event she attended where the issue of people with disability, who were discriminated by the banks, was raised. She also mentioned that NBA has a Disability Policy approved by NEC and that NBA will help promote national conversations on disability charter that will encourage implementation of initiatives that addresses the needs of physically challenged persons in our nation.
The President also referenced the recent incident in Niger state where 37 people, some of whom are minors, died in NCDC’s custody for alleged illegal mining. She charged NBA, and particularly SPIDEL, to go beyond the outrage and look at what can be achieved in public interest, from the unfortunate incident. Madam President decried the operations of illegal miners and the treatment of displaced members of the society. She described SPIDEL as the Section of the NBA that is bold and fearless and appositely positioned to address such incidents. She called on SPIDEL to position NBA towards harnessing the outcome of the general outrage over the incident by pushing for necessary changes in policies and practice.
The NBA President also condemned how Suspects are treated at detention centers particularly when they do not know anybody in high places to stand for them. ‘Rather than cosmetics talks, the rights of Children in conflict with the law must also be protected’ She stated. The Learned SAN informed the SPIDEL delegates of NBA’s initiative with the Police that is aimed at dealing with how lawyers are treated by the Police in the cause of discharging their duties. She noted that, if SPIDEL takes up these issues and succeeds, then NBA succeeds. Another issue that was indicated as important to be focused on is the strengthening of oversight of all detention facilities in the country.
Immediately after the courtesy visit, the NBA President invited the SPIDEL Chair and other members of the SPIDEL to attend the meeting with UNICEF which took place immediately after the courtesy visit.
