NBA Abuja Branch Accompanies Their Worships on Oversight Visits to Apo and Maitama Divisional Police Stations


Today 23rd September 2026. In furtherance of the commitment of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Abuja Branch (Unity Bar), to the protection of fundamental human rights and the promotion of accountability within the criminal justice system, Ikemefuna Onyeka, Esq., Vice Chairman of the NBA Abuja Branch and Chairman of the Human Rights Committee, today participated in police oversight and monitoring visits to the Apo and Maitama Divisional Police Stations, Abuja.

The visit to the Apo Divisional Police Station was undertaken alongside His Worship Abdulmajid Oniyangi and His Worship J. Obla, as part of ongoing efforts to monitor the treatment and welfare of persons in police custody, assess compliance with constitutional safeguards, and ensure that the rights and dignity of detainees are respected.

During the visit, the team interviewed persons in detention and reviewed the circumstances surrounding their detention. Three (3) detainees were released during the course of the visit, following the intervention and monitoring process.
The delegation thereafter proceeded to the Maitama Divisional Police Station, where they accompanied His Worship Abubakar Jega and conducted interviews with detainees to ascertain the circumstances surrounding their detention and identify matters requiring appropriate intervention.

The monitoring exercise underscores the NBA Abuja Branch’s continuing commitment to access to justice, the protection of fundamental human rights, due process and accountability in law enforcement. Such oversight visits constitute an important mechanism for ensuring that persons deprived of their liberty are treated in accordance with the Constitution, applicable laws, and established standards of human rights.

Through his participation in the exercise, Ikemefuna Onyeka, Esq., reaffirmed the commitment of the Human Rights Committee to constructive engagement with law-enforcement agencies while ensuring that the rights, dignity and welfare of every person in custody are protected.


The NBA Abuja Branch will continue to undertake monitoring and oversight initiatives aimed at strengthening respect for human rights, promoting accountability, and advancing a fair, transparent and effective criminal justice system.

NBA Abuja Branch Vice Chairman Secures Release of Two Inmates After Three Years in Custody

In a significant human rights intervention, the Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Abuja Branch (Unity Bar), and Chairman of the Branch Human Rights Committee, Ikemefuna Onyeka, Esq., has facilitated the release of two Inmates, Bali Joshua and Paul Sunday, who had been in custody since 2023 in connection with an alleged homicide.
