SPEAKER SPOTLIGHT: HON. JUSTICE DAKETIMA GABRIEL KIO, Ph.D

As the Nigerian Bar Association Annual General Conference (NBA AGC) 2026, themed “Beyond Limits,” approaches, the spotlight is on Hon. Justice Daketima Gabriel Kio, Ph.D, a distinguished Judge of the High Court of Justice, Rivers State, and one of the notable speakers at this year’s conference.

Born on 7 December 1974, Justice Kio has built an impressive career spanning judicial service, legal practice and academia. He obtained his LL.B degree with Second Class Honours, Upper Division, from Rivers State University in 2003 and was called to the Nigerian Bar on 12 October 2004.

He proceeded to obtain an LL.M from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, in 2008, and earned a Ph.D in Public Law, with a bias in Comparative Criminal Law, from the University of Nigeria in 2019. His academic background reflects a strong commitment to scholarship, particularly in the fields of Criminal Law, Public Law and legal theory.

Before his appointment to the High Court of Rivers State on 24 December 2021, Justice Kio was the Founding Partner of Lord Denning Chambers, Port Harcourt, where he gained valuable experience in legal practice. He also distinguished himself in academia as a Senior Lecturer at Novena University, Kwale, Delta State, and as a Lecturer in Law at Edwin Clark University, Kiagbodo, Delta State.

His academic and professional contributions have covered areas including Criminal Law, Law Practice, Jurisprudence and Legal Theory, combining practical legal experience with extensive teaching and research.

Justice Kio also serves as a Member of the Governing Board of the Justice Mary Odili Judicial Institute, Rivers State, and maintains membership of several professional bodies.

With his unique blend of judicial experience, legal practice and academic scholarship, Justice Daketima Gabriel Kio brings a rich perspective to the NBA AGC 2026. His participation is expected to contribute meaningfully to the intellectual and professional conversations that will define this year's conference.

NBA Anaocha Branch Names Hall After Okey Wali, SAN The (NBA), Anaocha Branch (Family Bar), has resolved to name its main meeting hall after the 26th President of the Association, . NBA ABUJA BRANCH CONDEMNS THE ILLEGAL ARREST AND DETENTION OF SIMON AROMOSELE, ESQ. IN THE COURSE OF THE DISCHARGE OF HIS LAWFUL PROFESSIONAL DUTIES The Nigerian Bar Association, Abuja Branch (Unity Bar), strongly condemns the illegal arrest and detention of one of its members, Mr. Simon Aromosele, Esq., today by officers of the Inspector General of Police Monitoring Unit, Force Headquarters, Abuja, in connection with the discharge of his lawful professional duties. Mr. Aromosele was arrested for writing to OPay Bank on behalf of his client, requesting the lifting of a restriction on his client's account or the production of the court order authorising the restriction.
