EMERGENCY ALERT: NBA CALLS FOR URGENT INTERVENTION AS LAWYERS TRAVELLING TO AGC 2026 REMAIN STRANDED ON OGHARA–SAPELE ROAD

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has raised an urgent alarm over reports that lawyers and other travellers heading to Port Harcourt, Rivers State, for the 2026 NBA Annual General Conference (AGC) have remained stranded on the Oghara–Sapele Road in Delta State following a major road obstruction.

According to information received by the Association, two trucks have blocked the roadway, bringing vehicular movement to a standstill and leaving several travellers stranded since Saturday, 22nd August 2026.

The situation has reportedly caused significant hardship, delays and growing concerns over the safety and security of lawyers and other road users travelling to Port Harcourt for the Conference.

In an emergency statement issued on Sunday, 23rd August 2026, the NBA National Publicity Secretary, Bridget Edokwe, Esq., called for the immediate intervention of the Delta State Traffic Management Authority (DESTMA), the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Nigeria Police Force (Traffic Section).

The NBA urged the relevant agencies to deploy personnel and necessary equipment without further delay to clear the obstruction and restore the free flow of traffic along the affected route.

The Association stressed that the situation should be treated as an emergency, particularly considering the prolonged period travellers have remained stranded and the potential risks to their safety, security and wellbeing.

With lawyers and delegates from different parts of the country currently travelling to Port Harcourt for the 2026 NBA Annual General Conference, the Association appealed to all relevant authorities to take immediate action to ensure the safe and unhindered movement of travellers.

The NBA also acknowledged the efforts of security, traffic and emergency personnel working to facilitate safe travel while calling for the situation on the Oghara–Sapele Road to be resolved without further delay.

The 2026 NBA Annual General Conference is currently taking place in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
