The Value of Legal Practice and the Dignity of the Profession.

The statement by that “Do not be a lawyer who charges so low that your clients do not understand the value of the profession” is not merely a comment about legal fees; it is a profound reminder about the dignity, value, and integrity of legal practice.

Law is a noble profession built on years of rigorous academic training, discipline, sacrifice, and continuous learning. Every lawyer invests enormous time, resources, and mental energy in acquiring the knowledge and skills required to represent clients effectively. Beyond the years spent in universities and the Nigerian Law School, legal practitioners daily bear the burden of advocacy, research, drafting, negotiations, court appearances, and the responsibility of protecting the rights and interests of clients.

Unfortunately, the increasing trend of underpricing legal services has continued to diminish the perceived value of the profession. When lawyers charge excessively low fees merely to attract clients, it sends a dangerous message that legal expertise is cheap and easily replaceable. In reality, competent legal representation is invaluable because the consequences of poor legal advice can destroy businesses, families, reputations, and even personal liberty.

A client who pays appropriately for legal services is more likely to appreciate the seriousness, professionalism, and responsibility attached to the lawyer’s work. Proper remuneration also enables lawyers to maintain high professional standards, invest in legal research, improve office structures, mentor younger lawyers, and render efficient services to society.

This is not an encouragement for exploitation or unreasonable charges. Rather, it is a call for lawyers to respect their worth and uphold the dignity of the profession. The Rules of Professional Conduct and the Legal Practitioners’ Remuneration Order already provide guidance for fair and professional fees. Lawyers must therefore avoid the unhealthy competition of “cheap legal services” that ultimately undermines the collective image of the Bar.

Young lawyers especially must understand that desperation should never replace professionalism. Building a successful legal career requires competence, integrity, patience, visibility, and excellence — not merely reducing fees to unsustainable levels. A lawyer who consistently undervalues his or her services may eventually struggle to sustain quality practice and professional growth.

The legal profession remains one of society’s most respected institutions because lawyers are custodians of justice, defenders of rights, and protectors of the rule of law. As such, every legal practitioner must strive to preserve the honour and prestige associated with the Bar.

The message by the NBA President is therefore timely and necessary. Lawyers must learn to charge fairly, confidently, and professionally in a manner that reflects the true value of legal services and preserves the dignity of the profession for future generations.
