OTU Oka-iwu Abuja Congratulates and Felicitates with NBA President, Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN on his Successful Inauguration and Appointment of two of Their Members, Chief Emeka Obegolu and Chief Maxwell Opara in his Committees.

The Otu Oka-iwu Abuja branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has sent a congratulatory message to Afam Osigwe, SAN on his successful inauguration as the 32nd President of the NBA. This milestone marks a significant achievement in the history of the association and a testament to the collective efforts of its members.

In his inaugural speech, President Osigwe expressed his gratitude and humility, stating:

"Today, I stand before you with deep gratitude and humility as I accept the weighty responsibility and honour of serving as the 32nd President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA). This occasion is more than just a personal achievement; it is a testament to the collective will of our distinguished members and their steadfast commitment to justice, equity, and the rule of law."
The branch commended President Osigwe for his visionary leadership, evident in his speech, which outlined a clear direction for the association. His swift appointments to key committees, particularly the NBA-AGC 2025 Committee for the upcoming conference in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, demonstrate his commitment to hitting the ground running.

The branch is delighted to see two of its members, Emeka Obegolu, SAN and Maxwell Okpara Esq., appointed to these committees. "We are proud to see our members represented in these crucial roles and are confident that they will carry out their mandates effectively," the statement read.

The 2025 NBA Annual General Conference (AGC) will be headed by Chief Emeka Obegolu, SAN, as the chairman of the planning committee for the upcoming conference in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, scheduled to hold from August 23 to August 30, 2025. He will be assisted by Sammie Somiari, SAN, as the Alternate Chair, alongside other committee members including Aminu Gadanya, Barbara Omosun (Secretary), Olaide Oluwayomi-Ajewole, Williams Daudu, and Hadiza Saeed Santali.
This conference promises to be a landmark event, bringing together legal professionals from across the country to discuss critical issues affecting the profession and the nation. The branch is excited to see the impact of this conference on the legal landscape in Nigeria.

Section 83 and the Myth of Judicial Silence in Party Politics

The recent assertion by my brother, Festus Okoye Esq, that lawyers have become scapegoats in internal party conflicts owing to their recourse to the courts calls for careful constitutional and judicial interrogation. At the centre of this debate lies Section 83 of the Electoral Act 2026, particularly the suggestion that it absolutely ousts the jurisdiction of the courts over the internal affairs of political parties. With the greatest respect to lawyers who are holding this view, that broad interpretation may appear overstretched and not constitutionally sustainable. Section 83(5) of the Electoral Act, read in isolation, appears to bar courts from entertaining disputes relating to party internal issues absolutely.  On a literal reading, it suggests a legislative intent to shield political parties from judicial scrutiny.
