OTU OKA-IWU ABUJA CONDEMNS THE HARRASSMENT OF ONE OF ITS MEMBER IN THE FEDERAL HIGH COURT PREMISES ABUJA

On Tuesday, the 7th day of May, 2024, a video trend began to circulate on various social media platforms where one of our member, Maxwell Opara, Esq. was harrassed at the premises of the Federal High Court, Abuja.

Information available to the Otu Oka-iwu reveals that Mr. Jesam Michael Ubi is a nominal complainant as well as a witness in a matter where Mawell represents the Defendants.

It was gathered that after the court session that fateful day, Mr. Jesam had an opportunity and addressed the Press with the Prosecution, and in order to get a balanced report as demanded by their Press, the Defendants and their legal team were invited to also address the Press.

However, while Maxwell was addressing the Press, the sympathisers of Mr. Jesam mobilized and surrounded Maxwell to hijack his interview. At the point of resisting the interruption of the interview, Maxwell was seen in the trending video, being harrassed and assaulted.

It is the stand of Otu Oka-iwu, Abuja that never should a lawyer carrying out his professional duty be put through such an embarrassing moment, especially, by a litigant and particularly within the court premises.

Otu Oka-iwu, Abuja strongly condems such actions and calls that Mr. Jesam be cited for contempt of court.
Lawyers cannot  become endangered species both within and outside the court.

Chidi Udekwe,
President,
Otu Oka-iwu, Abuja.
