Federal University at Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) has tragically lost a student, and the management is blaming the Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities (SSANU) for their insensitivity. The student, who was asthmatic, was unable to receive treatment due to the ongoing strike that led to the closure of the university's health center. This incident has raised concerns about the impact of strikes on student welfare.
The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Abayomi Fasina, expressed his disappointment with the actions of the SSANU members and warned that such behavior would not be tolerated in the future. He alleged that hoodlums, in collaboration with SSANU members, had infiltrated the university and shut it down based on false information. Fasina emphasized that the FUOYE management would not tolerate a breakdown of law and order under the guise of a strike.
Fasina's statement revealed the unfortunate circumstances surrounding the student's death. The inability to access medical care due to the closure of the university's health center highlights the dire consequences of strikes on students who rely on these facilities for their well-being. Fasina stated that had the health center been operational, it would have been easier for the student to receive treatment.
However, SSANU Chairman at FUOYE, Ben Faleye, challenged the management's claims. He stated that the union had duly notified the university of the seven-day warning strike and questioned whether FUOYE was the only federal university observing the strike. He also denied the allegations that the union incited or led hoodlums to invade the university. Faleye urged the management to provide evidence to support their accusations, arguing that it was the management that ambushed their monitoring team.
This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the importance of considering the potential consequences of strikes on students. While industrial action is a necessary tool for workers to voice their concerns and demand their rights, it is essential to find a balance that prioritizes the well-being and welfare of students. The management and union should engage in constructive dialogue to ensure that strikes do not have devastating effects on students' access to crucial services like healthcare. It is crucial for all parties involved to work towards a resolution that addresses the grievances of workers while simultaneously safeguarding the rights and well-being of students.
