Former senator representing Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani, has recently stated that the suspended Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr Betta Edu, and the Chief Executive Officer of the National Social Investment Programme Agency (NSIPA), Halima Shehu, would have likely survived suspension under former President Muhammadu Buhari's administration.
In an interview on Trust Radio, Sani, who was once a member of the All Progressives Congress, expressed his belief that if the public outcry calling for Dr Edu's suspension had occurred during Buhari's tenure, it would have been disregarded and fallen on deaf ears.
Sani commended President Bola Tinubu for taking decisive action in suspending Dr Edu and Shehu, stating that this move reflects the administration's responsiveness to public appeals.
However, Sani emphasized the difference between Tinubu and Buhari, stating that Tinubu's willingness to take action against wrongdoing sets him apart. He criticized Buhari for not thoroughly scrutinizing the individuals he appointed to positions, leading to their failure to meet expectations. Sani also highlighted that many members of Buhari's executive council served for eight years, without finding replacements despite their underperformance.
Furthermore, Sani expressed disappointment in the former administration's corruption allegations, despite their criticism of the previous government for corruption. He claimed that during Buhari's presidency, reporting misconduct would only result in assurances of a proper investigation, without any substantial outcomes.
In contrast, Sani praised Tinubu for suspending Betta Edu, acknowledging her contributions to his politics as the APC woman leader before the election. According to Sani, this demonstrates Tinubu's willingness to take action against wrongdoing.
It is worth noting that Sani's comments highlight the need for effective leadership, thorough scrutiny of appointees, and accountability in public office. The contrasting approaches of Buhari and Tinubu towards addressing allegations of misconduct serve as a reflection of their respective administrations' responsiveness to public concerns.
