Peter Obi, the flagbearer of the Labour Party (LP) in the February 2023 elections in Nigeria, has put forward a proposal for a five-year single presidential tenure for each of the six geopolitical zones in the country. This recommendation comes in response to a recent suggestion by Atiku Abubakar, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), for a constitutional amendment to establish a six-year single term for the President.
Obi's Proposal:
During a press conference in Abuja, Peter Obi outlined his proposal for a five-year single tenure, with a 30-year rotational system. He believes that this amendment to the constitution would create a functional and productive framework for Nigeria. Unlike Atiku's proposal, which suggested a six-year term for each of the six geopolitical zones, Obi argues for a shorter term with a rotational system to ensure inclusivity and equal representation.
Obi stated, "I will go for a five-year tenure, which will go for 30 years rotational — for a five-year tenure." He further explained, "I thank (former) Vice President Atiku Abubakar for his position and his commitment to ensuring that things work better going forward in Nigeria, but I disagree slightly."
Implementation of a Quasi-System:
In addition to the single tenure proposal, Obi also suggested the implementation of a quasi-system that would allow leaders in office to simultaneously participate in the legislature. This would enable elected leaders, whether prime minister or president, to be part of the legislature and answer questions directly from the public.
Obi emphasized, "Maybe a presidential question or prime minister question, instead of hiring surrogates. We want to hear from the people we elected now and that is critical. We cannot continue with this way where we are now, where people have outsourced leadership."
In Conclusion:
Peter Obi's proposal for a five-year single tenure for the presidential office, along with a rotational system, aims to create a more functional and inclusive framework for Nigeria. His suggestion also includes the implementation of a quasi-system that allows elected leaders to actively participate in the legislature and be accountable to the public. As Nigeria continues to strive for effective governance, Obi's proposal offers an alternative perspective on constitutional amendments and leadership structure.
