The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has included the name of Timipre Sylva, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), in the final list of candidates for the upcoming governorship election in Bayelsa State. This decision by INEC comes in compliance with an Appeal Court judgement that overturned the disqualification of Sylva's candidacy for the poll.
The new list, which was published on INEC's website, states that Sylva will be the APC governorship candidate, with Maciver Joshua as his running mate. The amendment was made following a court order delivered on October 31, 2023, which set aside the earlier judgement that disqualified Sylva from participating in the election.
In a statement, INEC said, "By virtue of the provisions of Section 287 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), the Commission is bound to enforce the Orders of Court on nomination of candidates by political parties in the state."
Sylva, a former Minister of State for Petroleum Resources and a former governor of Bayelsa, will be competing against 15 other contenders, including the incumbent governor, Duoye Diri of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The disqualification of Sylva by a Federal High Court in Abuja on October 10 was based on the argument that he would breach the constitutional provision if allowed to contest again, having already served two terms as governor. However, the Appeal Court ruled in Sylva's favor, stating that he was eligible to run in the election.
Sylva, who previously served as Bayelsa governor from May 2007 to April 2008, and then from May 2008 to January 2012, has now been given the opportunity to compete for the governorship once again.
The inclusion of Sylva's name in the final list of candidates for the Bayelsa governorship election demonstrates the importance of adhering to court orders in the electoral process. As INEC stated, it is obligated to enforce the decisions of the court regarding the nomination of candidates by political parties.
With the amended list now in effect, the stage is set for a competitive election in Bayelsa State, as Sylva and the other candidates vie for the opportunity to lead the state and implement their vision for its development.
